![]() This movie is for no one except for people who are beyond desperate for more FMA and I genuinely think should be universally panned by everyone just to teach film makers to never follow in this direction ever again. I’m typically pretty patient with movies and don’t lash out at things I don’t typically like, but this is something else. How is cutting out characters (and development), changing the sequence of events, and jumping all the way to the Immortal legion arc accurate to the source material in the slightest? Also, how do people even enjoy the act of sitting down and witnessing what happens in this movie? The directing is flat and boring, therefore not attracting any people who may simply just enjoy a visual fest, and not challenging or intellectual, making it a pain to sit through for people who might just want to watch it for an interesting and/or engaging story. This also isn’t manga accurate as people keep saying as well. When he’s actually moving it’s awkward and weightless (I’m honestly surprised that people compliment this aspect at all). The cgi for Al feels off and he’s out of shot for half the movie. Instead I’m going to go over what gets brushed off so much and explain why this is objectively a bad movie. I won’t go on about what everyone has already criticized a million times already. It’s time wasting and stupid, but since it isn’t canon to anything, I don’t dislike it on the same level as CoS (but it’s still a technically worse movie). Even the main cast feel out of character compared to the series they’re based on. The new characters aren’t very interesting to begin with and take up the majority of the movie, despite being a FMA title. It goes from “volume 1-esque” philosopher stone chasing to political and existential talk about the repression of poor people (with little weight) to lava explosions, larger-than-jumping-heights battles, and philosopher stone lasers, all with no flow in between. The direction for this movie feels incompetent and scattered. This movie is filler that nobody really wanted but got anyway just so Bones could cash on that FMA money. The movie has its strengths but more weaknesses, making it feel a lot more disappointing now that it’s the official ending of 03. Al regains his memories out of nowhere and lives with Ed in “our world” and live happily ever after. I also think the ending, especially the way it’s presented, is just fan fictiony. The story feels pretty squished together and underdeveloped overall and I just thought about how much better it could’ve been if it was just a sequel series instead. While I think the directing is pretty strong throughout the movie and managed to keep me awake and pay attention, they really should’ve left the series as it was. The acting is all fine, and the special effects (aside from Al’s armor which is surprisingly well done) is pretty meh. It feels very rushed as any movie adaptation of that much material probably would be. ![]() ![]() The controversy over using Japanese actors was stupid and the least of the film’s problems. The movie gave me the impression that at least some people involved had read the manga or watched the anime, so it had that up on some other adaptations. The live action movie was bad, but not nearly as bad as it could have been and for that much I am thankful. The setting is kind of cool and I actually liked the animation style, but it goes too far with the twists and could have spent more time on the Elrics themselves (also I feel like the movie should have cut characters like Mustang, Hawkeye, and Winry or given them more to do because they feel shoehorned in). It was a watchable side story that is completely unnecessary unless you are a big fan of the characters. It was very silly at times (in stark contrast to the ‘03 version itself, which I felt was needlessly dark especially near the end), made a few character choices I didn’t really like, and still felt kind of unsatisfying as an ending to me.
